Conspiracy Theory 2: Attack Gators
Conspiracy theories are fun. There could be an ounce of truth to any of them, but for that most part they are just a twisted way to look at things. One of the more famous is Michael Jordan being forced to retire because his gambling had gotten out of control. Sounds interesting and maybe feasible in one way or another, but why “force” the most marketable player in the history of your sport to stop playing for any period of time?
John Adams of GoVolsExtra provides us some of the various conspiracy theories Tennessee fans have regarding Florida spying on their school and athletic programs. They typically involve Tennessee employees with Florida connections who are doing their best to sabotage Vol sports.
Tennessee has something called the Big Orange Caravan in which they go on a 10-city tour to connect with fans and promote the Vols. This year’s version kicks off in Orlando, FL – or a little too close to Gainesville for the liking of most Tennessee fans. And why does it? Because Tennessee’s chancellor is Jimmy Cheek – at least that’s what those wearing the tin foil helmets believe. Cheek just happened to have the following on his resume: Senior Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources – University of Florida.
Adams also points out that Cheek was involved in Bruce Pearl’s firing. Pearl was the head coach that beat the Gators in eight out of 13 tries. Never mind that he was also a walking NCAA violation and deserved to be dismissed just as much as someone who wins less than five games in a season.
Adams also brings up theories involving Tennessee president Joe DiPietro (formerly the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Florida) and famous football coach and athletic director Doug Dickey (you all remember him). These attack Gators have conspired for years to bring down Vol athletics and it must stop! Then again, there might be little to talk about if it does.
