The Greatest Gators by Jersey Number: #89 – Wes Chandler

#89 – Wes Chandler, WR (1974-77)

32 years after he played his last game for Florida, Chandler still ranks eighth on the career receiving touchdowns list with 22. A two-time All-American, Chandler led the Gators in receiving for three consecutive seasons from 1975 to 1977. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Florida receivers ever.

Chandler was selected third overall in the 1978 NFL Draft. During his pro career, he was selected to four Pro Bowls and twice named an All-Pro.

Last Year’s Pick: Chandler
Notables: Ricky Nattiel, WR (1983-86)

Current Gator: Stephen Alli, WR

How can you not like Alli? He graduated from high school a full year early and is now a Gator. During the recruiting process, his other top school was Harvard. And he is a burner. Alli will need a few All-American seasons to take over Chandler (something I wouldn’t bet on), but he does have a chance to make a name for himself as a top #89. Of course these days, receivers seem to prefer the lower jersey numbers, so don’t be surprised if Alli doesn’t stick with #89 for his entire career.
