The Greatest Gators by Jersey Number: #99 – Sammy Green

Nearly a year ago, One-Eyed Willy and I took the task of naming the best Florida players at each jersey number. And it wasn’t easy. As I detailed then, the most comprehensive list I found was good, but had holes. We decided to not make a selection at a number if we didn’t truly believe there was a “greatest” player who wore it. Too many of these types of lists have arbitrary inclusions because the writers felt the need to fill each slot. We didn’t feel such need.

Now I revisit the list. Based on the 2008 season (a glorious one at that), there are a few changes. I’m also taking a different approach by going through each number, one at a time (with the exception of those that don’t warrant mention), and comparing the greats to those currently on the roster.

So here we go. And remember, the years listed are the years the player wore that number, not necessarily the entire time they were a Gator.

#99 – Sammy Green, LB (1972-75)

In 1976, Green set the Florida single-season record with 202 tackles – a mark that still stands today and will likely never be broken. He played during a time when tackles were plentiful for the orange and blue and finished his career with 475 (good for third on the all-time list). Tackles have been tabulated differently over the years, so it’s doubtful anyone will ever come near those marks again, but Green’s numbers are impressive nonetheless.

Green was selected in the second round of the 1976 NFL Draft and would go on to play in the NFL for five seasons.

Current Gator: Omar Hunter, DT

Hunter came to Florida with the hype to take the spot at whatever jersey number he ended up in. But overtaking Green may be a little much to ask. After taking a redshirt season during his first year, Hunter will have the opportunity to make an impact sooner than most do along the defensive line. If he can put together a solid few seasons, there’s no reason to think that he can’t at the very least be a notable #99.
