Florida Gators, Oklahoma Sooners, BCS National Championship
I sat in a doctor’s office this morning listening to people complain about the wait. The longer they waited, the more agitated they got. The more agitated they got, the more I tried to immerse myself in cell phone solitaire.
I’m a complainer for the most part. I admit it. I don’t take a lot in stride. But I don’t complain if my wait to see a doctor is longer than expected. Maybe it’s because they do something I definitely can’t and if I’m there to see them, I obviously need their help. Maybe it’s because my college roommate was pre-med…until he moved in with me. Not that his life went way off track or anything. He seems to be happy. But he sure ain’t a doctor. So, I don’t complain. I sit there patiently and wait for my turn. Therefore, as my gift to you, you get a complain-free BCS National Championship preview. With one exception…
While waiting at the doctor’s office, I was watching CNN and their weather guy mentioned he was pulling for the Sooners because he feels Tim Tebow has talked too much trash in recent weeks. No joke. That was his reasoning. Because Tebow has been disrespectful to Big 12 defenses. Actually, I don’t even think I can complain about this guy’s comments because they are just too funny to even take seriously.
Anyway, here are some things you need to know – and most likely already do – for tonight’s game:
1. This game will go down as having the 2007, 2008, and 2009 Heisman Trophy winners doing battle while quarterbacking their teams. Yes, Tebow is returning for his senior year and yes, he will win the Heisman next season. Do I know either of those things for sure? Of course not.
2. Florida’s run offense will win them the game. Oklahoma has a pretty darn good rushing attack. Problem is a big part of it – DeMarco Murray – will be watching from the sidelines. All reports seem to indicate Percy Harvin will play. And so will Jeff Demps. And so will Chris Rainey. And so will Emmanuel Moody. And so will Kestahn Moore. I don’t know if Moore will get a single carry, but he’s a senior and hasn’t complained about becoming basically the fifth or sixth option in his final year. I wish him nothing but good luck in his life beyond football and hope the Gators can engineer a blowout so he can get a carry or two.
3. Oklahoma will score. There’s a lot of talk about the Gator defense being the toughest the Sooners have faced in quite some time and it’s true. But OU is still going to put up some points. They probably won’t put up 50. May not put up 40. But it’s very hard to imagine them being held to anything under the 30 mark. Florida’s defense will come up with a few stops, but the offense needs to take advantage of those opportunities and make sure they keep putting points on the board.
4. This could be Tebow’s last game as a Gator. It could be Harvin’s. It could be Brandon Spikes’. We don’t know for sure, but pay attention. These three are three of the greatest to ever wear orange and blue. People have already been comparing Andre Debose to Harvin. Sorry, but there’s only one Percy Harvin.
5. Two years ago Derrick Harvey and Jarvis Moss had their coming out party and both ended up as 1st-round draft picks. It’s not out of the question to think Jermaine Cunningham and Carlos Dunlap could do the same. OU has a great offensive line. So did Alabama.
6. To the ill-informed fan, seeing a true freshman atop the depth chart at corner would seem like a bad thing. When it’s Janoris Jenkins, it’s not. Jenkins has been one of the best true freshman corners in a long time. And not just in terms of Florida. We’re talking across the nation here.
7. It’s the national championship. What’s not to like? Read all you want about how Utah or USC or Texas or whoever you think should have a claim at the title. Well, no they shouldn’t. Sorry, but broken system or not, this game is the national championship. The winner of this game is the national champion. I’m not trying to tick fans of those other schools off, but even if we don’t like the current system, it’s what’s in place right now and these are the teams that made it to the title game. Similar to waiting for the doctor, it’s time to stop complaining and realize unless your Florida or Oklahoma, you’re just going to have to wait longer until your team wins a national title.
