Monday Afternoon Long Snapper (5/19/08)

Unfortunately there is less and less college football news once we hit the summer. But the good news is we’re only a little over 3 months before the start of the season.

• The Southeastern Conference is holding tight onto the Georgia Dome as the location of their championship game and ONLY their championship game. It looks like the Atlantic Coast Conference is itching to find a permanent location for their game, but the SEC won’t consider any solution involving sharing Atlanta. Good for them. There are plenty of other cities the ACC can call home.

In 2008 and 2009, Tampa will be the host city for the ACC title game before it moves to Charlotte for 2010 and 2011. USF isn’t too happy with the ACC either and would rather schedule its home game against West Virginia on championship Saturday every other year. I can’t blame them either. The USF/WVU rivalry has become a big game over the past few years and is important for the Big East. Since the conference doesn’t have a championship game of its own, they want to keep that game on that weekend for the foreseeable future.

• Since the charges against Preston Parker were reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor, he will only have to sit out 2 games. I’m sure he will be greatly missed against Western Carolina and Chattanooga.

I’m not trying to single out Parker (okay maybe I am a little bit), but I find it funny when players are suspended for games that mean absolutely nothing and should be a cakewalk. To prove this is an equal opportunity Web site, I will admit I found it just as amusing when UF had a couple players serve their suspensions against Western Carolina during the 2006 season. What I really don’t get though is how a felony can ever be reduced to a misdemeanor. A guy was charged with something that by the law is deemed a felony. Now the law didn’t change so that can’t be it. What’s more likely is a slightly different charge was brought forward. The new charge is only a misdemeanor and everyone is happy. You gotta love the treatment athletes get. Then again, we are the ones that love cheering them on every game.

• Ex-LSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux has decided to continue the pursuit of his degree at Jacksonville State. Wow, I can’t believe I got through typing that sentence with a straight face. What Perrilloux does from this point forward is of little concern for most people. I still think he’ll make a fine Arena League QB, but what do I know?

Anyway, there have been some rumors that he’s trying to recruit a few other big names to join him. Word is that he is interested in former FSU and UTEP receiver Fred Rouse and former Clemson feel good story Ray Ray McElrathbey. I have no problem with Rouse joining Perrilloux. Seems like a match made in…well…you know where. But McElrathbey? Please leave him alone Ryan. Ray Ray seems like he’s trying to turn his life around. Ending up with you and Rouse is a recipe for disaster.

• Not that we need to hear about even more college football players in trouble, but don’t you just hate articles like this? TELL US WHAT HAPPENED!

• This story posted on The Wizard of Odds is just too funny. Purdue safety Torri Williams was arrested for stealing condoms. Come on Torri. Most campus infirmaries or student unions give them out for free.
