Florida Gators Release Depth Chart for Season Opener Against Idaho Vandals

There are only a couple of surprises as Florida released its depth chart for the season opener against Idaho. Experience won over youth in most of the spots, but let’s take a look at the starters and backups for the Gators versus the Vandals:

Offense

Quarterback - Jeff Driskel; Treon Harris

Running BackKelvin Taylor OR Matt Jones OR Mack Brown

FullbackHunter Joyer; Gideon Ajagbe

X ReceiverQuinton Dunbar; Demarcus Robinson; Alvin Bailey

Y (Slot) ReceiverLatroy Pittman; Valdez Showers; C.J. Worton

Z ReceiverAhmad Fulwood; Andre Debose, Chris Thompson

Tight End – Clay Burton; Jake McGee

Left TackleD.J. Humphries; David Sharpe

Left GuardTrip Thurman; Tyler Moore; Antonio Riles

CenterMax Garcia; Drew Sarvary

Right GuardTrenton Brown OR Tyler Moore

Right TackleChaz Green; Roderick Johnson

Nothing really jumps out at me here except for Burton starting over McGee. Burton may end up starting, but McGee will definitely be on the field in passing situations. He’s lethal with the football in his hands. Also, you may be wondering why Harris is backup to Driskel and not Grier. The plan all along was for Grier to redshirt to put on some size and learn the game before he got thrown to SEC defenses. Look for Harris to be used in certain situations.

Defense

EndJonathan Bullard; Bryan Cox Jr.

TackleLeon Orr; Joey Ivie IV

Nose TackleDarious Cummings; Jay-nard Bostwick

BUCK – Dante Fowler Jr.; Alex McCalister

SAM – Neiron Ball; Alex Anzalone

MIKE – Michael Taylor; Jarrad Davis

WILL – Antonio Morrison; Daniel McMillian

Cornerback – Vernon Hargreaves III; Jalen Tabor

Cornerback - Brian Poole; JC Jackson OR Quincy Wilson

Safety – Keanu Neal; Duke Dawson

Safety – Jabari Gorman; Nick Washington OR Marcell Harris

Nickelback – Marcus Maye; Brian Poole

Dime LB  – Neiron Ball; Jarrad Davis

Dime DB – Brian Poole; Marcell Harris

The secondary might surprise you a bit, but it might not stay that way for long. Will Muschamp went experience over youth this time around, but don’t be surprised to see Tabor rise up the depth chart much like Hargreaves did last season.

Special Teams

Kicker – Austin Hardin OR Francisco Velez

Punter – Kyle Christy OR Johnny Townsend

Kick Returner – Andre Debose; Quinton Dunbar; Chris Thompson

Punt Returner – Andre Debose OR Demarcus Robinson OR Vernon Hargreaves III

Long Snapper – Drew Ferris; Kyle Crofoot

Holder – Jeff Driskel; Kyle Crofoot

No real surprise here that it’s Hardin and the newly minted scholarship player Velez are duking it out for kicking duties. Same goes with Christy and Townsend. Until either shows any consistency, it’ll likely remain that way. The only other thing of note for the special teams is Driskel is the holder for the field goal unit. Could Florida run some trickeration with him?
