Last Sunday night the Florida Gators sat anxiously around a TV, watching the NCAA selection show to find out their tournament fate. The result: the #5 National Seed and host of the Gainesville Regional.
Florida’s cohorts in the regional are all from the Sunshine State, with the University of Central Florida, Florida A&M, and Stetson filling out the bracket. The Gators have not faced the Hatters this season, but soundly defeated the other teams in the regional, including a 10-6 win over the UCF Knights and a 9-0 five-inning shutout of the FAMU Rattlers.
The winner of the Gainesville Regional will face the winner of the Seattle Regional, with the higher ranked team hosting the Super Regional in a best-of-three series. The highest ranked team in the Seattle Regional is 12th-ranked Washington. BYU, Northwestern, and Iona round out that bracket.
UF has now hosted a regional for an impressive 12 consecutive years, and the last seven of those have seen the Gators ranked in the top five in the country.
The Gators (45-11) will kick off their action against A&M (24-27) at 6:00 on Friday in the double-elimination tournament.
