Bait & Bits: Skyler Mornhinweg, Volleyball, and Women's Basketball

South Carolina RB Mike Davis. South Carolina sophomore running back Mike Davis originally committed to the University of Florida in 2011, but later switched his commitment to the Gamecocks. Davis felt the Florida coaching staff were dishonest to him during his recruitment. Here’s what Davis had to say via Twitter:

Davis leads the SEC with 1,058 rushing yards and has scored 10 touchdowns.

Matchup of Top-10’s  in the O’Dome. In a first for the 30-year-old Stephen C. O’Connell Center, a pair of top 10 volleyball squads will meet Friday night. The No. 5 Gators (23-2) will host the undefeated, seventh-ranked Missouri Tigers (29-0) at 7 pm. Florida is 13-0 at home on the season, but lost in four sets to Mizzou on October 20th.

Skyler Mornhinweg Slotted to get First Start. The Gators are now officially on their third string quarterback. If QB Tyler Murphy (game-time decision; right shoulder) is held out of Satuday’s game at South Carolina, then redshirt freshman QB Skyler Mornhinweg will get the start for Florida. Mornhinweg, son of New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, is a three-star recruit from St. Joseph’s Prep School in Philadelphia. Walk-on Christian Provancha would be the backup as it stands now.

Women’s Basketball Drops First Game. In their first road game of the season, Florida (2-1) could not overcome a slow start as they lost to Virginia Tech (3-0), 71-59. The Gators nearly came back from a 28-point deficit, cutting the Hokie lead to four with 6:51 remaining in the game. Virginia Tech responded with a 11-3 run to put the game out of reach. Senior guard Jaterra Bonds finished the night with 21 points.
