With this bye week Hail Florida Hail will be doing a position breakdown for your Florida Gators through the first two weeks. First up: running backs.
Mack Brown: 35 carries, 141 yards (4 ypc), 2 TDs
Matt Jones: 18 carries, 47 yards (2.6 ypc)
Valdez Showers: 6 carries, 58 yards (9.7 ypc)
Kelvin Taylor: 5 carries, 43 yards (8.6 ypc)
Mark Herndon: 4 carries, 32 yards (8 ypc)
Hunter Joyer: 1 carry, 7 yards (7 ypc)
Mack Brown had a great showing in the first game against Toledo. Next week against Miami, he rushed 10 times for 29 yards, with a long of 11. While he is no longer the No. 1 back, Brown has the ability to deliver a 2nd punch throughout the season.
On other hand, Matt Jones seemed a little rusty in his first game back. Against Miami, the sophomore fumbled on the opening possession and only gained 2.6 yards per carry. With Driskel struggling, look for the Gators to rely on the running game early, especially Jones. If he can shake off the rust, he can still live up to the preseason all-conference choice.
A pleasant surprise has been converted RB Valdez Showers. The former safety has been lining up all over the field and has made good use of it. The Detroit product ripped off a 29 yard run against Toledo and has caught five passes for 26 yards.
As of right now Kelvin Taylor will have a minimal role. Hats off to Mark Herndon on earning that scholarship. Hard working young player who deserved it.
