Miami Hurricanes Defeat Florida Gators

It’s a miracle folks! Kirk Herbstreit picked the Gators over Miami. I guess he learned from last week. It didn’t work out though.

1st Quarter

The Gators received the opening kick. Matt Jones’ first carry of the year went for nine yards. Florida drove down the field, but on a big hit, Matt Jones fumbled the ball and Miami recovered. The Canes drove, assisted by some costly Gator penalties, and capped it off with Herb Waters TD. Later, a three and out from the Canes ended in a Loucheiz Purifoy blocked punt. The Gators started on the Miami 10. Jeff Driskel walked it on a zone read. The two point conversion failed. Ensuing drive for the Canes ended in a 52 yard TD from Morris to Dorsett.

Score: Canes 14 – Gators 6

2nd Quarter

With a 46 yard reception by Solomon Patton putting the Gators in good position, Driskel overthrew a potential TD pass and then threw an interception over the middle. Dominique Easley was big in stopping the Canes on the ensuing series. The Gators were once again in the red zone but failed to capitalize; Driskel stopped on QB sneak on 4th and inches. With the clock winding down, the Gators were again threatening in the red zone but Trey Burton fumbled inside the 15.

3rd Quarter

After a three and out by the Canes on the opening possession, the Gators drove but had to settle for a FG after again struggling in the red zone. The ball returned to Florida after Purifoy and the defense forced another three and out. Gators defense continues to dominate Miami but no luck on the offensive end for Florida. 4th Quarter

The Florida defense continued to keep the Gators in the game. Florida has a nice drive but then stalled again on third down. After a big hit, Duke Johnson was taken out of the game (returned later) at about the 11 minute mark. Vernon Hargreaves III came up with an interception (2nd in two games) to give the ball back to the Gators. Driskel threw a pick in the red zone to give it back to the Canes. The Florida defense forced a Miami punt but Driskel fumbles and the Canes recover on the Florida five yard line. After a Duke Johnson TD, the Gators drove and Driskel threw a 21 yard TD to Solomon Patton. Miami then recovered the onside kick put went three and out and were forced to punt. Driskel sacked. Game over.

Score: Canes 21 – Gators 16

Bottom Line

Gators cannot capitalize in the red zone. Costly turnovers negate the phenomenal play by the Gators defense.  Stephen Morris doesn’t “shine” but does enough to beat the Gators. Duke Johnson runs for 58 yards.
