Muschamp Pulls a Fast One on Meyer, Flips Nation's #2 Punter

Just when you thought it was safe to put away the 2013 Florida Gators recruiting class, Will Muschamp adds another.

Hours after adding a lineman, Muschamp flipped a punter, former Ohio State commit Johnny Townsend the nation’s second ranked punter.

Townsend becomes the eighth player that Muschamp has flipped this recruiting cycle.

Muschamp and Meyer have battled for the last 48 hours over this recruit as rumors have flied over recruiting promises and possible underhanded tactics but in the end Muschamp won out for Townsend’s services.

Townsend is 6-2 200 and averaged just under 45 yards per punt this season and was a standout performer in the 2013 U.S. Army All American game.

While punters are often an afterthought in recruiting circles, Gator fans have seen how important they are to the overall game especially with a system which relies upon a ball control offense, a stout defense, and solid special teams.

With Kyle Christy, a finalist for the Ray Guy award last season, being a junior next season, Townsend will likely take a redshirt season next year and then have another year to work on form and technique leaving him three seasons after Christy graduates.

Townsend becomes recruit number 30 in this years recruiting class for the Gators.
