Breaking: Derek Dooley Fired at Tennessee?

Reports overnight were that Derek Dooley has been fired as the head football coach at the University of Tennessee.

The only problem is, nobody told Dooley.

“Everybody said I was fired, and I didn’t know it… I had already talked to (athletic director) Dave Hart.”  Dooley was quoted as say in a report by Evan Woodbery on knoxnews.com.

The report went on to quote Dooley as saying that Hart told him he

“had not made a decision,” and “either the sources are wrong or Dave wasn’t being forthright with me.  And I have no reason to believe he wasn’t being honest with me.”

So, as the Fox News slogan goes: we’ll report, you decide.

Realistically, though, all you need to know is Dave Hart isn’t rushing to deny the reports either.

Most observers believe it’s only a matter of time before Dooley is let go.  They’re probably figuring out all the details, crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s, as well as getting a potential coaching search put together.  Heck they might even be pulling an Auburn and actually gauging interest from potential candidates.

Regardless, the future for Dooley at Tennessee does not look nearly as bright as those burnt orange pants he’s famous for wearing on the sidelines.
