BCS Musings: Computers Love The Florida Gators

The new BCS standings are out and as expected they were shaken up at the top after the huge upset by Texas A&M over previously number one Alabama.

The new number one team in the BCS is Kansas State followed by Oregon and then Notre Dame.  Alabama drops to fourth, followed by SEC East champion Georgia, and then the Gators.  Texas A&M, on the strength of that big upset, is the biggest mover this week leaping from number fifteen to number eight.  They are surrounded on either side by SEC teams LSU in seventh and South Carolina in ninth.  Florida State, who the Gators play in a couple of weeks, rounds out the top ten.

Some of the BCS numbers that stand out are the respect the computers have for the cardiac Gators and the lack of respect those same computers have for number two Oregon.  The average computer ranking for the Gators is 3rd with a high of two and a low of six thrown out per the rules.  The human polls who find Florida’s lack of high flying success to be unimpressive both have Florida ranked 7th behind one loss teams Alabama, Georgia, and Florida State.

Conversely, the same computers, which incidentally favor schedule strength over offensive stats, have no love lost for number two Oregon.  The consensus computer ranking for the Ducks is 4th, one spot behind Florida which is the Anti-Oregon.  Of course, human voters love the Ducks high flying ways as they’re ranked first in both of those polls.

Of the three top ranked undefeated teams the computers favor Notre Dame, while the human polls have them behind both the Ducks and K State.

As an aside, it’s interesting to note of the top ten BCS teams Florida has the most wins against other BCS top ten teams with three.  The only other school with more than one is LSU with two.  All the other SEC top ten teams have one apiece.  The top three of K State, Oregon, and Notre Dame?  Zip, Zilch, Zero. Nada. None. See Ya.

After spending a morning listening to an obnoxious Duck fan give me every reason why Chip Kelly should be Coach of the Year over Muschamp, I find the fact that the BCS computers have the Gators ahead of Oregon not just BCS Musings, but BCS aMusing!

That’s All Folks!

While some Oregon fans get caught up in the moment, the greybacks in the fold, defer to the computers. If Oregon wins out, they will deserve a trip to the national championship game, and the computers will improve Oregon’s position. Alabama proves, and Chip Kelly says, “let’s lift up our heads in December, then let the discussion start.”

I’m with you there Oregon is certainly the most exciting team in the country and, in spite of popular opinion, actually plays some good defense, the USC game notwithstanding
