On Friday night, the No. 1 Florida Gators took the series opener 7-5 over the No. 12 Miami Hurricanes. With the win, the Gators now have nine in a row over the ‘Canes dating back to March 6, 2010.
Junior Austin Maddox led the way for Florida. As a first baseman, he went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Maddox then took his place on the mound and pitched 3.1 scoreless innings. Powered by seven strikeouts in those innings, Maddox recorded his third save of the season.
Junior Mike Zunino continued his torrid pace going 4-for-5 on the night with two runs scored, two RBI and his third homerun of the season. Zunino has raised his batting average to .500, by far the highest mark on the team. The junior is making a case early that he wants to repeat as SEC Player of the Year.
The Gators and ‘Canes face off again Saturday night at 7:00 PM.
