St. Thomas Aquinas has been good to the Florida Gators. Realistically, it has been good to a lot of schools. The high school power gave the Gators another athlete on Saturday with the commitment of defensive end Brian Cox Jr. ($) If you recognize the name, it’s because it also belongs to former Miami Dolphins star linebacker Brian Cox – the latest Florida commit’s father.
The 6’3″, 240-pound Cox is considered to be among the top 100 players in the state of Florida. In most other states that may not mean much, but in Florida that equates to a desirable prospect. Although listed as a defensive end, Cox may slide into the buck position currently inhabited by Ronald Powell. His speed and athleticism make the hybrid position a possibility and spending a season or two learning from Powell will benefit Cox. Known as a relentless defender, Cox’s constant motor will serve him well during his college career.
Cox becomes the 19th member of Florida’s 2012 recruiting class and gives the Gators another solid defensive line prospect. He was scheduled to visit North Carolina next weekend, but is comfortable with his commitment to Florida and has canceled that commitment.
